From Sanskrit animiá¹£a "unblinking, vigilant", the name of a Deva, and said of a fish, privative a + ni-miá¹£a "twinkling" (said of Vishnu, and the name of a son of Garuda); ni-miá¹£a in turn is from miá¹£a "false appearance".
