From Ancient Greek �λλην (Hellen) "Greek", "luminary, bright", from prefix έλ- (el) "sun, bright, shiny". (See helios "sun", electron "amber", etc.). In Greek mythology �λλην, whom the �λληνε� (Hellenes) "Greeks" were named after,
was the son of �ε�καλί�ν (Deucalion) and Π���α (Pyrra).
