First attested in 1870; coined by w:Thomas Huxley|Thomas Huxley. Either from AGr. polytonic|�γν���ο� (agn�stos) "ignorant" or a- + Gnostic|gnostic. Deriving (either way) from AGr. polytonic|�- (a-) "not" + polytonic|γιγν��κ� (gign�sk�) "I know".
