Etymology
Old English alecgan|�lecgan �lay down�, from Germanic, corresponding to a-|�- �out, aside� + lecgan �lay�. Cognate with German erlegen. In Middle English the word was identical to forms of allege and alloy, leading to much overlapping of senses.
