Etymology
From L. antidotum, from Gr. άν�ίδο�ον antidoton "given as a remedy for", verbal adj. of αν�ιδίδοναι antididonai "give in return", from αν�ι- anti "against" (confer L. ante, "before") + δίδοναι didonai "to give".
Compare with Latin antidotum and F. antidote. See E. dose.
