French apte, Latin aptus, from obsolete apere, "to fasten, to join, to fit", akin to apisci "to reach, attain": compare with Gr. ���ειν (haptīn) "to fasten" and Sanskrit �प�त (�pta) "fit", from �प� (�p) "to reach, attain".
