Etymology 1
From the OE. term|assa|langang, from probable hypocoristic form of OIr. term|asan|langsga which entered the language through the Northumbrian dialect of OE.. Other Germanic tongues had no such word instead using forms similar to term|esol which does exist in OE..
The Celtic word comes from Latin term|asinus|langla and before this, confer Greek term|tronos||langel. This word has a Semitic origin, probably Hebrew, term|trahton|||she-ass|langhe. The Sanskrit term|trashva|||horse|langsa (Prakrit term||trassa) may be related.
