From F. #French|bistro, originally in the form bistingo

Originates from just after the Napoleonic wars. When Russian troops occupied Paris they shouted "bistro" ("quickly" in Russian) to the waiters as they waited a long time for meals.

So "bistro" thereafter meant a place where food was served quickly.
