Etymology
Medieval English chirche < Old English �iri�e church, from w:West Germanic|West Germanic *kirika, from w:Greek language|Greek kyriake (oikia) Lord�s (house), from kyrios ruler, lord. For vowel evolution, see bury. Greek kyriakon (adj.) of the Lord was used of houses of Christian worship since circa 300 AD, especially in the East, though it was less common in this sense than ekklesia or basilike. An example of the direct Greek-to-Germanic progress of many Christian words, via the w:Goths|Goths; it was probably used by West Germanic people in their pre-Christian period. Also picked up by Slavic, via Old High German term|chirihha|langgoh (cf. Old Church Slavonic term|scCyrl|���к��|trcrĭky|langcu, Russian term|scCyrl|�е�ков�|trcérkov�|lang=ru). w:Romance languages|Romance and w:Celtic languages|Celtic languages use variants of L. ecclesia.
