Etymology
16th Century Scots Language crack.
Crack is a Scots|Scots language word which has remained in constant use in Scotland and much of Northern England up to the present day. The word was introduced to Ireland by the Ulster Scots in the early Seventeenth Century and used extensively in both their speech and literature (see Ulster Scots).
In recent decades it has been adopted into Irish Gaelic, and is spelled 'craic' as there is no letter "k" in the Irish language.
Many words in current usage throughout Ireland are from previous centuries, some older English words have long since passed out of usage but in much of Ireland they are still in use.
