ME., from OF. engin, which is from L. ingenium meaning 'talent, device'. Ingenium is derived from in- meaning 'in' and gignere meaning 'beget'. Engine originally meant 'ingenuity,cunning' which eventually developed into meaning 'the product of ingenuity, a plot or snare' and 'tool, weapon'.
