From Middle English ipocrisie, from Latin hypocrisis (play-acting or pretense), via Old French. Ultimately from the Greek hupokrisis (act in a play), from hupokrīnesthai (to play a part or pretend), from krīnesthai (to explain) + hupo (hypo-).
