Etymology 1

From the ME. word iren, a rhotacism of the OE. word isern|īsern. Cognate to the Middle Dutch iser, Old Frankish isarn|īsarn, Old Frisian isern|īsern, Old High German isarn (German Eisen), Old Norse járn, Old Saxon isarn.

The word derives from the PG. root *īsarna-, which is most likely from the Celtic root *isarnon (Old Irish iarn, Welsh haearn, haiarn), from the PIE. root *is-(e)ro-, with the meaning of �powerful� or �holy�, from the Proto-Indo-European root *eis (�strong�). Cognate on that level to the Sanskrit word <!-- ??? --> (isirah, meaning �vigorous, strong�) and the Greek word ἱε��� (hierós, meaning �strong�). Possibly akin to the Latin word for anger, ira#Latin|ira.
