Coined by w:Paracelsus|Paracelsus for a tinture he made containing opium < NL. < L. laudere "to praise," or ladanum "a gum resin" < AGr. ladanon. Originally the same word as ladanum, ladbdanum, compare French #French|laudanum, Italian laudano, ladano. See ladanum
