From Afrikaans meerkat#Afrikaans|meerkat. The name comes from Dutch meerkat#Dutch|meerkat, but by misidentification. Dutch meerkat (lit. �lake-cat�) and German Meerkatze, literally �sea-cat�) are monkeys (guenon).
