OE. nægel|næġel, from Proto-Germanic *nagalaz, from Proto-Indo-European base *(o)nogʰ �nail�. Cognate with Dutch nagel, German Nagel, Swedish nagel; and (from Indo-European) with Greek �ν�ξ, Latin unguis, Russian ного��, Breton ivin.
