Prefix "palaeo-" (from greek 'palaios'= "old") and "tropical" (from greek 'tropikos', referring to where the length of the day equals that of the night)

- Occurring in tropical Africa and Asia, i.e. the tropics of "the old world". Used in biology, pertaining to area of geographical occurrence.
