From Germanic *saliz, from Indo-European *sel-. Cognate with Old Saxon seli, Old High German sali, Old Norse salr (Swedish sal#Swedish|sal), Lombardic sala; and with Old Church Slavonic (and Russian) �ело. There was also a Germanic variant *saloz- ( > OE sæl).
