Literally "to throw together". From LL. symbolum "mark" or "token" < AGr. ��μβολον (sumbolon) "a sign or token by which one infers a thing" < ��μβάλλ� (sumball�) "I throw together, dash together" < ��ν (sun) "with, together" + βάλλ� (ball�) "I throw"
