ME. þorn and OE. þorn, from common Ger. *thurn(u)-, from PIE. *(s)ter-n- "sharp stalk or thorn", possibly derived from *ster- "stiff". Near cognates include German Dorn and Gothic ������� (þaurnus). Further cognates include Old Church Slavonic ���н� (trŭnŭ) "thorn" and Sanskrit त�ण (t��a) "grass".
