From ancient Greek ��αγ�δ�� (tragodos) "tragedy singer, tragic poet", from ��άγο� (tragos) "male goat" + αοιδ�� (aoidos) "singer", a reference to the goat-satyrs of the theatrical plays of the Dorians.
