Etymology: Old English alecgan, Älecgan "lay down", from Germanic, corresponding to a-, Ä- "out, aside" + lecgan "lay". Cognate with German erlegen. In Middle English the word was identical to forms of allege and alloy, leading to much overlapping of senses.
