Etymology: From (term, chamaeleon, lang=la) < Ancient Greek (term, sc=polytonic, , , crawling lion, tr=khamaileon, lang=grc), a kind of lizard known for changing its colour, also the name of various plants, so called from their leaves changing colour, < (khamai) "on the earth, on the ground" + (leon) "lion".
