  1. Sturdy adhesive tape, usually black and 48mm (2 inches)wide, made of plastic reinforced with cross-linked fibre. Derives from the tape used to attach lighting and microphones to the long poles needed to place these in optimal position during film-making (see Gaffer)
Synonyms: Duct tape; Duck tape. The latter is probably a mispronunciation. Duct tape must be waterproof: gaffer tape must withstand high temperatures
