  1. The oldest known Slavonic alphabet, created by Saint Cyril around AD 862"863. It was soon replaced by the Cyrillic alphabet. The Croatian variant is still found in use in the Croatian Church along the Dalmatian coast. It was the first script (along with the Croatian language) that was granted special permission by the Vatican to be used in liturgy instead of Latin.
