Etymology: Named by the French astronomer w:Nicolas Louis de Lacaille, Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1763. Originally called horologium, HÅrologium oscillitorium, Oscillitorium( for "pendulum clock") to honor the Dutch astronomer and mathematician Christian Huygens, inventor of the pendulum clock.
