It refers to a group of local languages/dialects which can trace their origins to southern w:Fujian, Fujian province, China. The most prominent dialects are w:Amoy (linguistics), Amoy (referred to as w:Taiwanese (linguistics), Taiwanese in Taiwan, and Hokkien in Southeast Asia), w:Teochew (dialect), Teochew, and w:Qiongwen, Qiongwen. It belongs to the w:Min (linguistics), Min dialect group of the Sinitic branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family.
