A possible origin of scimitar is from the w:Persian language, Persian shim- or w:shamshir, shamshir. This, in turn, is said to be derived from w:Middle Persian, Middle Persian shafshÄr meaning; lion's claw (sham = claw, shir = lion), in reference to the sword's curve.
