Etymology: From the Middle English yole, from Old English geÅl, cognate with Old Norse jól, Estonian jíul, Finnish joulu, German Jul, Scandinavian jul, etc., the name of a pre-Christian holiday held in midwinter, and later applied to the Christian celebration of Christmas. The Anglo-Saxon cognate giuli was the name for a two-month midwinter season.
